Metal Sonic’s Timeline: Addressing the Classic Era

Ever since Sonic 4 Episode Metal came out and introduced this idea that Metal Sonic lay abandoned on Little Planet from CD through to Sonic 4, there’s been considerable confusion on how this implicates his Classic series appearances. Surely they would not ask us to consider that whole swathe of appearances non-canon? We need Triple Trouble for Fang, and it’s been referenced since! Here’s my interpretation based on the most current information given to us.

Metal Sonic as an actual recurring character goes Sonic CD > Sonic 4 > the rest of the Modern games. The Sonic World Story indicates that Sonic 4 is chronologically the first game in the Modern era and has the tagline “fierce battle with the revived Metal Sonic.” This is our main guy from Heroes and beyond, who gets implanted with the Copycat chip, bounces in and out of the Neo upgrade, and is plagued by existential contradiction.

If he’s been shown to have skipped effectively the entire Classic era, then the ones we encounter throughout it must just mass-produced super badniks, which we could now specifically unify under the label of the Metal Fighter series thank to Sonic Superstars. These are powerful boss robots, but they still prove to be far lesser to the original Metal Sonic. I’ve always been a proponent of the idea that, since Sonic CD happens before Sonic 2, the Mecha Sonic series are just rush-jobs Eggman put together while awaiting an opportunity to rescue his true masterpiece from Little Planet. The introduction of the Metal Fighters is the final piece in the puzzle to confirm it, since it reveals how actively Eggman was trying to recreate the potential that the original held. Metal Knuckles in Sonic R also falls under their umbrella.

We see two broken robots in Mania, further suggesting mass production.

Additionally, we do at the very least know of one other confirmed, secondary robot named Metal Sonic Kai in Knuckles Chaotix (the JP manual calls the base robot Kai, Encyclospeedia attributing Kai exclusively to the red titan is a retcon or miscommunication). Eggman recovered the CPUs from a previous encounter with Sonic (Triple Trouble seems the most likely candidate to me) and supplanted them into a new chassis which had been empowered by the Dark Ring.

Or for other consideration, Rocket Metal from the opening of Sonic the Fighters also bears the model name “Mecha Sonic Model No.29” despite seeming like part of the Metal Sonic line, clearly indicating that Eggman has experimented with the concept.

In these ways, I believe that Sonic Superstars and its Metal Fighters have been used to codify that long-standing contradiction in the history of Metal Sonic.

Phantom Metal Sonic

The Metal Sonic in Mania is either a Phantom Copy or the original appearing via the Phantom Ruby distorting spacetime (similar to Generations). I’ve categorised Mania Adventures as a Metal Fighter, but that one I feel is a touch harder to place than any other. Mania Adventures is confusing in general, since it overlaps with Mania and Mania Plus on the timeline yet TailsTube #5 indicates that all three Mania projects are canon as part of a singular Sonic timeline.

And just for consideration, in the Mecha Sonic series we also have:

  1. Mecha Sonic (Sonic 2, 8-bit)
  2. Mecha Sonic Mk.1 (Sonic 2, 16-bit)
  3. Mecha Sonic Mk.2 (Sonic 3)
  4. Mecha Sonic Model No.29 (Sonic the Fighters)
  5. Mecha Sonic Mk.3 (Sonic Adventure)
